Pre-Washing Your Goalkeeper Gloves
When you first receive any pair of goalkeeper gloves, it’s important to pre-wash them before use. This essential step activates the grip and ensures your gloves perform at their best from day one.
Why is pre-washing necessary?
Pre-washing helps remove any factory-applied preservatives within the latex. It also opens up the latex's pores, allowing moisture in—this is what truly activates the grip.
How do I activate the grip?
We’ve created a handy glove wash guide to walk you through the full process. The key points: air dry naturally in a stable, room-temperature environment.
How do I know I’ve done it right?
During the wash, you should notice the water turning a yellowish or milky colour—this indicates the preservatives are being released from the latex.
We recommend rinsing and repeating the process once more. If the water runs clear or shows minimal colour change the second time, your gloves are fully prepped and the grip is activated.
Maintaining grip performance
Latex performs best when it’s slightly moist. Dry latex becomes brittle, which increases the risk of flaking and premature wear.
To keep your gloves in top condition: 24 hours before a match.
⚠️ Note: While some players spit on their gloves, we recommend avoiding this. The bacteria and enzymes introduced by saliva can degrade the latex and shorten the lifespan of your grip.
Summary
Keep your latex hydrated, avoid direct heat, and always pre-wash new gloves. With the right care, your Zelus goalkeeper gloves will perform at their peak for longer.
